Letter-writing down in August
Even letter-writers take a break during August.
Our monthly count of letters sent to lawmakers through Congress.org revealed a 40 percent drop in August from the month before.
In all, just 26,173 letters were sent, compared to 43,714 in July.
One issue was that there was no single issue. Unlike previous months, there was no central issue in August that generated as much heat as immigration in May or jobs in July.
Also, with Congress away for most of the month on recess, letter writers may have felt it was better to save their fire.
The top category was the catch-all government affairs, followed by budget, labor and immigration.
