The Hopper: School Days

While the main vehicles in both chambers for an overhaul of child nutrition programs may be S 3307 (Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010) and HR 5504 (Improving Nutrition for America’s Children Act), a large number of bills have been introduced dealing with nutrition for kids.

Two bills (HR 5432 and S 3449) were introduced on May 27, 2010, and would create a Nutrition Corps. The Service for Healthier Kids Act was introduced in the House by Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.) and in the Senate by Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa). Neither bill has advanced from committee.

HR 4958 is the Healthy Children Through School Nutrition Education Act and was introduced on March 25, 2010, by Rep. Joe Baca (D-Calif.).

The bill would require educational agencies participation in a lunch program to provide students 50 hours of school nutrition education per school year. This has not moved from committee.

Another set of bills — HR 1324 and S 934 — would update the national school nutrition standards to require food and drinks sold outside of school meals to conform to "current nutrition science."

Mainly, the bills would require nutrition standards for foods other than those served under lunch and breakfast programs. The House bill was introduced on March 5, 2009, by Rep. Lynn Woosley (D-Calif.) and Sen. Harkin introduced the Senate bill on April 30, 2009.

These measures, called the Child Nutrition Promotion and School Lunch Protection Act of 2009, have not advanced.
