Marriage tour prompts counter rally

Gay-marrage activists plan to hold a coinciding rally in D.C.

Gay-marriage opponents were planning to hold a rally in D.C.'s Freedom Plaza next month, but it seems a rival group has beat them to it.

A group called Full Equality Now D.C. is planning to hold an afternoon rally on Aug. 15 at the frequent protest place. The group stated on its event permit that 200 people plan "to protest against the National Organization for Marriage."

NOM , which has been holding a multi-state tour against gay marriage, posted a schedule online that stated the group's intent to hold a rally on that very spot. The Capitol steps were listed as a backup location.

It is possible that the two groups could share the Freedom Plaza spot, although it's unclear if that is what they want.

More details are on Full Equality's site:

On Sunday, August 15, the National Organization for Marriage will be coming to Washington, D.C. as part of their summer bus tour. They are holding rallies all across the country in an attempt to slow the spread of equality. That stops here.

Full Equality Now D.C. is working with a coalition of local and national groups to host "The Big Commit," a ceremony where LGBTQ people and their allies can commit to working tirelessly until we have achieved full equality in every state and at the federal level.
