Roundup: Tea partyers back gay rights

* Some tea party activists back a court decision that knocks down the federal Defense of Marriage Act even though it paves the way for more states to allow gay marriage. The reason is that the judge's argument against DOMA was based on state rights, the Washington Post explains.

* That ruling puts President Obama in an awkward position because the Department of Justice typically appeals decisions that challenge federal law. But if White House officials do so in this case, they risk alienating Democrats' gay base, the Washington Independent notes.

* Activist Cindy Sheehan was acquitted Monday of crossing a police barrier during the anti-war rally earlier this year, the Washington Post reports. Three others were convicted.

* Environmental group NRDC has opened a Gulf Coast resource center where area residents can talk about how the oil spill has affected them. The nonprofit plans to share those stories with the nation, according to its blog .
