The Hopper: Electric Drive

Since the Deepwater Horizon spill, oil is getting a bad reputation.

So transportation utilizing other forms of fuel — such as electric — may seem more appealing to lawmakers.

Though electric cars were the talk in the late 1990s, due to current pending legislation in Congress, they could see a second jolt.

Four bills seek to increase the deployment of plug-in electric vehicles through varying incentives and programs.

* S 3442 , the Electric Vehicle Deployment Act of 2010, sponsored by Sen. Byron L. Dorgan (D-N.D.), was introduced on May 27.

* HR 5442 , the Electric Drive Vehicle Deployment Act of 2010, sponsored by Rep. Edward J. Markey, was also introduced on May 27.

* HR 1742 , which would establish a program to deploy and integrate electric vehicles, sponsored by Rep. Anna G. Eshoo (D-Calif.), was introduced March 26 of last year.

* HR 4399 , the American Electric Vehicle Manufacturing Act, sponsored by Rep. Jose E. Serrano (D-N.Y.), was introduced Dec. 16, 2009.
