Hunger strike planned over Don't Ask law

Not all gay rights activists are happy with new compromise.

Activists Dan Choi and Jim Pietrangelo plan to begin a hunger strike against the compromise hatched on Don't Ask Don't Tell.

As many gay rights activists waited eagerly for word on whether the Senate Armed Services Committee would vote to repeal the law Thursday, Choi was among a small minority criticizing the plan.

"A group of fasters and supporters will commence immediately following congress mark-ups," Choi tweeted   Thursday morning. "The time has come to fast for Dignity and Equality."

Choi listed three demands. He wants to ax the Pentagon study about the implications of a repeal, end Don't Ask Don't Tell immediately, and "replace all discriminatory regulations in the military with a comprehensive non-discrimination policy."

Lawmakers are moving forward with votes for repeal in both chambers, but they have agreed to wait for the Pentagon review before implementing a repeal of the military law. That means it could be December before Don't Ask Don't Tell ends if it passes.

Gay rights groups like Human Rights Campaign support the plan, while others like Get Equal accuse the D.C.-based organization of giving up too much.

In his call for a hunger strike via Twitter, Choi also said that "some are ready to spend Memorial Weekend in prison," but did not clarify what actions would lead to arrest.

Choi was arrested twice this year for handcuffing himself to the White House fence over Don't Ask Don't Tell.
