With no arrest, protesters left hanging

Protesters plan to stay through the night if police don't arrest them.

It's been 10 hours, and the police still haven't come for the environmentalists staging a sit-in at the Environmental Protection Agency.

Six activists from Rainforest Action Network set up purple tents on federal property Thursday morning and refused to budge, hoping to get arrested. They are protesting the ongoing practice of mountaintop mining in the Appalachian range.

They had planned to be there until they were arrested or E.P.A. Administrator Lisa Jackson agreed to visit the coal mining sites.

Neither has happened, so the activists have decided to stay through the night and leave at the 24-hour mark Friday morning.

RAN spokeswoman Nell Greenberg insisted that it was a productive day, citing an influx of posts on Jackson's Facebook wall from people who want the E.P.A. to action.

Jackson also tweeted   about the protest.
