White House revives immigration

President to meet with lawmakers on the issue.

President Obama is meeting with two Senators to gauge whether the time is right to overhaul the nation's immigration system.

Democrat Charles E. Schumer of New York and Republican Lindsey Graham of South Carolina have been working together to draft a bill that could get bipartisan support.

The White House is under pressure from immigrant rights groups who say the President has failed to deliver on a campaign promise to overhaul the system. They warned that Democrats could lose the Latino vote   in midterm elections if they don't act.

Immigrant rights groups are rallying the troops for a large demonstration in Washington D.C. On March 21, they expect to have 100,000 march for comprehensive immigration overhaul.

The Los Angeles Times   details the White House plan:

The basis of a bill would include a path toward citizenship for the 10.8 million people living in the U.S. illegally. Citizenship would not be granted lightly, the White House said. Undocumented workers would need to register, pay taxes and pay a penalty for violating the law. Failure to comply might result in deportation.

For now, the Senate is still embroiled in debates on health care and job creation. With a climate bill waiting on the sidelines, it's unclear whether there will be time to take on immigration this year.
