House passes tweaked jobs bill

The Senate has to vote on change to taxes.

The House tweaked the Senate's $17.6 billion jobs package (HR 2847 ) before passing it 217-201 on Thursday.

Lawmakers adjusted some tax provisions to completely offset the bill's costs. The move came after Blue Dog Democrats complained that the measure didn't comply with the pay-as-you-go rule.

"Paygo" requires that Congress find ways to pay for new government programs or tax cuts so that they don't add to the growing federal deficit.

The Senate now has to vote on the changes in the legislation, delaying federal efforts to curb unemployment. February's jobless numbers , revealed Friday, showed no improvement from the month before.

The jobs package   still focuses on payroll tax relief, highway allocations, local bonds subsidies, and small business deductions.
