Pelosi vows to act on immigration

Democrats respond as groups launch public campaign.

Democrats are rethinking their strategy on immigration and may move a bill through the House, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) told a Spanish-language newspaper Thursday.

While the Senate works on health care and jobs, the House has enough votes to pass healthcare, Pelosi said in an interview printed in La Opinion.

She added that she has President Obama's support and "hoped to pass immigration reform this year."

Her statement comes as pro-immigration groups have launched a public campaign to demanding that Democrats deliver on their campaign promises on the issue.

On Thursday, faith groups  launched a nationwide campaign to rally the public around immigration.

"What matters to us ought to matter to any wise politician running for office," Janet Murguia, president of the National Council of La Raza said on a conference call with reporters.

Her group helped launch a report  that highlights the value of Latino voters in the upcoming midterm elections.
