Obama defends budget cuts
His proposal favors jobs, education over defense spending.
President Obama likened the government to a business as he tried to sell his $3.8 trillion budget proposal for the next fiscal year.
"Like any business, we're also looking for more ways to get more bang for our buck," the president said Monday, aiming to cushion cuts to more than 100 government programs and a discretionary spending freeze. "We simply cannot continue to spend as if deficits don't have consequences," he said.
The budget lays out the administration's priorities for the year: Jobs are high on that list, as are education, alternative energy, and airport security. The president is devoting billions to each, while reining in spending on military equipment and fossil fuel subsidies. He is also scaling back tax credits to the wealthy and proposing a $90 billion tax on big banks.
Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are sure to take issue with the the president's proposal.
Liberals have already expressed concern over the proposed spending freeze, while conservatives say the cuts don't go far enough to address a swelling deficit. Congress has to review, amend, and eventually approve a version of the budget.
