Bernanke confirmed to second term

Ben Bernanke has been confirmed to a second term as head of the Federal Reserve.

Although he was Time magazine's Person of the Year , Bernanke's confirmation had been in question because of criticism of his approach to bank regulation before last year's financial crisis.

The final vote was 70-30 -- a record number of votes against a Fed chairman.

Several senators praised his leadership of the 2008 bank bailout and other actions that kept the nation's financial institutions afloat.

"The chairmanship of Ben Bernanke has in no small measure made it possible for this nation to avoid a catastrophe that I think would have loomed as large as the Great Depression and maybe larger," said Sen. Chris Dodd.

The previous high of no votes was 16, when Chairman Paul Volker was up for a second term.
