Airports lobby to raise facility fee

Fee could raise from $4.50 to $7 for each leg of a trip.

Airports are lobbying Congress to raise a faciilty fee.

Citing the rising cost of construction, airports have been pressing Congress to raise the cap on a "passenger facility charge" that is added to the cost of airline tickets, USA Today reports .

The charge is currently $4.50 for each leg of the trip or up to $18 per round trip. The money raised pays for improvements to airport runways and terminals.

Airports are pushing for the fee to increase to $7.50 and be tied to inflation.

A House bill (H.R. 915 ) to reauthorize the Federal Aviation Administration would allow the fee to be raised to $7 and rename it the "passenger facility charge." (Sec. 111)

The legislation is currently stalled in the Senate.
