Google phones get some Sunlight

Open-source directory now available for phones running Android.

The Sunlight Foundation's open-source developers made their mobile debut this month with a directory of Members of Congress .

The free application, designed by Sunlight Labs for Google's Android mobile platform, connects users with profiles, news, YouTube videos and even Twitter feeds related to a legislator.

Results vary by lawmaker (not all make headlines or do the social networking thing), but all Members have at least a photo, office phone number, Web site, district and party info.

The search feature allows users to find Congressional Members by last name, state, ZIP code or even the user's geographic location.

The only bug discovered in our tests earlier this month occurred with the listing for Sen. Paul Kirk (D-Mass.), who was appointed to fill the late Sen. Edward Kennedy's (D) seat: When accessing Kirk's profile, the application spit out an error and reverted to a prior screen.

Developers will iron out that bug and work on new feature requests in coming weeks while also wrapping up an iPhone application that connects users with Congressional documents, according to Sunlight Labs Director Clay Johnson.

He said features from both apps will eventually be merged into a single application.

"We want to make it easy," Johnson said, "for people to contact their Member of Congress, see what their Member is doing and have a good idea of what's going on — no matter where they are."
