GOP to Obama: Listen to your general

Republican leaders want President Obama to send more troops to Afghanistan

Republicans in Congress say President Obama has picked a bad time to reconsider his strategy in Afghanistan.

They want the president to give the general in charge there, Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, all the troops he says he needs.

CQ Today ($) and Roll Call($) both report that Republicans, such as Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and John McCain of Arizona, say the president should honor McChrystal's request, as outlined in his assessment of conditions in Afghanistan.

Back in February, Obama made good on a campaign promise to send more troops to the region. But now he's reconsidering the strategy for rooting out al Qaeda and the Taliban.

The New York Times reportsthat the White House is looking at a more targeted approach that would require fewer troops.

Democrats are wary of a big increase in troops, partly because pollssuggest the public isn't whole-heartedly behind an expanded war effort there.
