I am writing to express my concern over the recent amendment to the Senate budget bill proposed by Senator McCain. I feel the proposed cuts are shortsighted and hollow gestures. IF we want to address Federal spending I am in favor of that BUT Sen. McCain is proposing the cutting STARBASE and Youth Challenge. These are the only two STEM-related youth education programs being funded by the DoD. These programs embody the spirit of encouraging students to explore STEM fields and providing them with wonderfully unique learning opportunities that engages them in ways not feasible in the traditional classroom.
WE MUST CONTINUE TO FUND PROGRAMS SUCH AS THESE. I have heard countless times the importance of funding STEM education as a key element of moving our country forward and resparking the economy and our educational goals as a nation. To cut and potentially fully eliminate established, proven programs that do just that is mind-numbingly depressing. We MUST make sure that funding for these programs continue AND push to extend funding for programs such as these.
Please take that in to the most sincere consideration when compromising on the budget in the coming days, and weeks. To cut this programming is to cut opportunities that many students do not and will not get if STARBASE and Youth Challenge cease to exist.
