Sen. Richard Blumenthal
Sen. Christopher Murphy
Rep. John Larson
March 7, 2013
In your letter to Brian France, NASCAR CEO, you wrote: “After the horrific mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, which claimed the lives of 20 children and six educators, the NRA has taken an unprecedented extreme position in the debate over the proper response to this tragedy, placing themselves at odds with the overwhelming majority of the American people, and even their own members,” Murphy wrote in the letter. “Given the emotional state of the national conversation, I believe it would be imprudent for NASCAR to step into such a heated political debate and take sides in this debate by allowing the NRA the title role in the race.”
I take full offence at several not factual charges contained in the above letter.
1. The NRA is NOT taking an unprecedented extreme position. You are. The 2nd Amendment is what it is. Criminals and crazy people do not follow the law. You can pass legislation until you are blue and it won’t effect any change with those groups.
2. The NRA is NOT advocating an improper response to the tragedy. You are. Exploiting the tragedy for your own agenda is shameful.
3. The NRA is NOT placing themselves at odds with their own members. Just look at the exploding NRA membership (I’m one of those recent members that fear lawmakers trampling on the constitution more than guns).
4. You have NO right to interfere in business transactions such as what the NRA and NASCAR are planning.
We have an economy that is crumbling under debt, over-regulation, out-of-control entitlements and a government that prefers European-style socialism over the American Dream.
I am thoroughly disgusted with your position.
