Sen. Robert Menendez
Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen

February 3, 2013

Dear President, Senators and Representative,

I am writing to you on behalf of myself and other responsible, concerned, law-abiding gun owners. The recent tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown and the theater shooting in Colorado have the potential to impact ALL gun owners. Recent proposals, such as the irrational gun ban proposal by Senator Dianne Feinstein, are extremely unfair and a violation of the second amendment. To be deemed "guilty by association" and lumped into the same category as people like Adam Lanza and James Eagan Holmes just because I am a gun owner is an atrocity.

Perhaps what the government should be concentrating on is the fact that the majority of violent gun crimes are committed by mentally ill individuals. Why isn’t more money and time devoted to mental health research in the US? Funding for mental health has dropped significantly while money is foolishly allocated to other areas of less importance. In order to obtain a firearm ID card in New Jersey, you are subjected to a preliminary “mental health assessment” by your friends. Why aren’t mental health records subject to inspection on a continuous basis? Why can’t HIPAA be modified to permit access to the information of family/household members of gun owners or gun applicants by law enforcement. That’s not an infringement of rights; that should be a necessary exception which could prevent disasters such as these and the loss of innocent lives in the future.

Implementing a weapons ban is only going to worsen the situation with criminals illegally obtaining firearms from the black market; it is not going to stop monsters from committing senseless acts of violence. Outlawing firearms, certain high-capacity magazines and modification of weapons for law-abiding citizens is not the answer or the solution. My family members fought in World War I, World War II and the Vietnam War. I am a patriot, a proud American, someone who knows the history of the US and is a firm believer in the rights that my forefathers fought for " “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” Please don’t deny my right as an American Citizen. Please consider all of the relevant factors before you implement a weapons ban that has the potential to affect innocent and responsible citizens like myself. Thanks for your time.
