Re: Your Concerns

Dear Dr. Ajanaku: Thank you for contacting me regarding the nomination of
former Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel to serve as Secretary of Defense. I
appreciate hearing your views on this matter. On February 26, 2013, the
Senate confirmed Secretary Hagel's nomination by a vote of 58 to 41. I
voted in favor of his nomination. A decorated veteran, Secretary Hagel was
an effective member of the Senate and has always been a strong advocate
for the men and women of our military. He is the first former enlisted man
and the first veteran of the Vietnam War to serve as Secretary of Defense.
His service in peace and war has given him invaluable experience and
unique insight into national security affairs. During his confirmation
process, Secretary Hagel received broad support from a wide array of
senior statesmen and defense and foreign policy organizations, including
five former Secretaries of Defense, three former Secretaries of State and
six former National Security Advisors, who served under Presidents of both
political parties. His military background gives Secretary Hagel an
invaluable perspective not only with respect to the difficult decisions
and recommendations a Secretary of Defense must make regarding the use of
force and the commitment of U.S. troops overseas but also with respect to
the day-to-day decisions a Secretary must make to ensure our men and women
in uniform and their families receive the support and assistance they need
and deserve. It is a positive message for our soldiers, sailors, airmen
and marines in harm’s way around the world to know that one of their own
holds the highest office in the Department of Defense. Along with many of
my colleagues, I had concerns about statements Secretary Hagel made over
the course of his career on a number of subjects. Indeed, both privately
and publicly I pressed him on a number of points. However, he stated
unequivocally that Iran is a major threat, that he is fully committed to
the President’s goal of preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon,
and that he is a strong supporter of our ally Israel. The President needs
to have a Secretary of Defense in whom he has trust, who will give him
unvarnished advice, who is a person of integrity and who has a personal
understanding of the consequences of decisions relative to the use of
military force. I believe Secretary Hagel has those critically important
qualifications. Thank you again for contacting me. Sincerely, Carl

Dear Dr. Ajanaku,

Thank you for contacting me to voice your support for the nomination of
Judge John Roberts to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Judge Roberts was appointed by President George W. Bush, and later
confirmed by the Senate in 2002 to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the
District of Columbia. He has enjoyed a distinguished career in government
service, private practice and, most recently, as a federal judge. Judge
Roberts is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School. After law
school, he clerked for Judge Henry Friendly on the U.S. Court of Appeals
and Chief Justice William Rehnquist on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Roberts has had a distinguished and honorable career as a public servant.
He served in several positions in the Reagan administration, including as
Associate White House Counsel. He also served, from 1989-93, as the
Principal Deputy Solicitor General, the government's second highest
ranking lawyer before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Clearly John Roberts is highly qualified, and if you look at his resume
it's really sterling. He has a good educational background, is a really
sharp person and has argued before the Supreme Court more than 30 times.
Perhaps even more importantly, I think he has a very good temperament for
the Court. He gets high marks and praise from really everyone who's worked
with him, Democrats and Republicans alike, which is very important. I'm
going to look at all of his major decisions very carefully, and I'm going
to do a lot of reading before I'm prepared to cast my final vote. But
certainly this nominee seems highly qualified.

Once again, thank you for contacting me and please do not hesitate to
contact me in the future.

Sincerely,

Senator David Vitter
United States Senator
