National Background Check System
Rep. Doris Matsui
Sen. Dianne Feinstein
February 20, 2013
There is already a background check system in place, and it is called the National Instant Criminal background check System (NICS).
There is no need to institute another system. In 2010 NICS denied 76,000 applications, but only 13 were prosecuted for attempting to buy a gun illegally. Either we are doing a bad job of making the system we have work properly or there was no reason to prosecute the others. I bring this up because I want you to be wary of the slippery slope.
Our Second Amendment was put in place to allow the populous to be armed. The 4th and the 5th were put in place for our protection too. Under no circumstances should it be the business of the government to know if I am armed, and what arms I hold.
NICS goes far enough already and I will not tolerate proposals that allow any check system to increase the amount of information held about me and my status as a law abiding citizen.
