Weapons Ban

To:
Rep. Doris Matsui
Sen. Dianne Feinstein

February 19, 2013

Banning modern sporting rifles AKA "assault weapons" will have zero impact on gun violence. In imposing the 1994 “assault weapon” ban, Congress also required a study of its effect. The resulting study, conducted for the National Institute of Justice, concluded that “the banned weapons and magazines were never used in more than a modest fraction of all gun murders." That finding is supported by state and local police reports, which have shown that “assault weapons” have been used in about 1-2 percent of murders, and in about two percent of all violent crimes. By comparison, over 30 percent of murders are committed without any type of firearm whatsoever.

I must insist you look more seriously at the role mental health and pyscotropic drugs play in violence. Those and the erosion of the family unit and general ethics among the American culture are the true cause of the problems. Violence is only a symptom, I know it is easier put a band-aid over the problem and forget about it, but you have been elected to make the tough decisions necessary to bring about change. Respect the oath you took to uphold the constitution, roll up your sleeves, and tackle the real problems and leave responsible tax paying VOTING gun owners alone.
