Contact Your Federal Officials
Rep. Larry Bucshon
February 21, 2013
As of late February 2013, multiple state legislatures have passed onerous civilian disarmament bills. As your constituent, I must voice my strong disapproval of these measures both at the state and federal level. In a search for middle ground compromise the debate has turned to such things as mandatory gun owner’s insurance, Universal Background Checks, and limitations to magazine capacity. Allow me to state in no uncertain terms that gun owners DO NOT approve of these measures. These are not compromises we are willing to make as they are limits on our freedom and privacy.
Mandatory gun owner’s insurance is a de facto attempt to ban firearms through burdensome financial requirements for gun ownership. Furthermore, the euphemistically named Universal Background Check is in essence an attempt at a federal gun registry. A Universal Background Check would require ALL private sales to be subjected to a NICS check, but such a law would be unenforceable without a comprehensive database of every privately owned firearm. How else would the federal government know when a background check had been side-stepped?
I am in favor of keeping guns out of the hands of criminals, but by definition, criminals do not obey the law. Restricting the freedom of law-abiding citizens will do nothing to curb violence. We need comprehensive improvements in the economy and the criminal justice system. As your constituent, I am asking for your help in protecting my rights when these measures come to a vote. Thank you for your time.
