Why we must have universal healthcare...
Without UHC, a large segment of our society will soon be uninsurable and left behind...
We now have the ability to test and diagnose adults, children, even fetuses for specific genetic markers that reveal their risk for developing all types of diseases and disabilities such as cancer or other life threatening (and costly) conditions. Our ability to use genetics, DNA, science for such purposes has surpassed our systems ability to ensure the privacy and proper dissemination of this information. Soon, many insurance companies will mine this available data to put certain people into high risk categories and essentially make these persons uninsurable. Insurance companies will not want to take upon the additional risk of insuring people that have a higher chance of getting cancer or some other dreaded disease. Because our current insurance system is a business enterprise concerned about making profit more than an institution concerned about the health of its clients, insurance companies will do all they can to drop coverage for such high risk groups. These "high risk" and uninsurable people may be your sisters, your parents, your children... maybe your self. Without the safety-net of a guarantee of a standard level of healthcare for everyone, a large segment of our society will be left uninsurable and without health care. And for those anti-abortionists... if you feel that Universal Health Care might increase abortions due to available healthcare funding, then you must also consider that the lack of Universal Health Care may also spur more elective abortions because of the added pressure of having "genetically perfect" children that are free from any possible medical needs. People may think twice about carrying a child to term if the child has a medical condition that with the availability of medical care would otherwise be manageable. We need Universal Health Care to prevent a large segment of our society from becoming uninsurable and left to wither and possibly die, all the while having the ability to treat these people. In just takes common sense and a little forethought to realize that UHC is needed by us all.
