A refusal to commit infanticide made early Christians different from everyone else and became bedrock to all Christian Churches. The practice of infanticide would have ceased in any case because of advances in agriculture, livestock domestication, fruit and grain hybridization and food storage. I think that the practice of infanticide ends along with occurrences of widespread starvation.
The early Church was taken over and transformed by Constantine and subsequent Emperors, Popes and rulers whose territorial conquests required large armies. As recently as the twentieth century the Italian Fascist and the German Nazi movements required large armies. They criminalized abortion and made mass appeals to women to bear children. The mullahs of Iran also criminalized abortion and made childbearing a patriotic duty with the result that 70% of Iran's population today is under the age of 30.
Fundamentalist church pastors foment anger and hatred in order to increase membership and raise funds according to Florida evangelical pastor Joel Hunter. Anger taps into how disgruntled traditionalists feel about the diffuse and unsettling changes in gender roles in society. That is why there is so little demand for better conditions for children and women. The underlying cry is for male recognition and primacy in the home.
