Subject:
Put to Death in Texas Because The Bible Said So
To: Sen. Sherrod Brown
November 6, 2009
This is referring to the criminal justice system in Texas. On November 6th, Khristian Oliver was executed for murder. Why was the death penalty on the charge? Because the jurors consulted the bible and this passage: "And if he smite him with an instrument of iron, so that he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death." How can we enforce the separation of church and state if the bible is the very thing we swear on?
Half of those put to death in Texas since the death penalty was legalized in 1977 were put to death during Rick Perry's time in office. Another quarter occurred during Bush's governorship.
But its especially troubling when religious texts are used to determine someones fate. The supreme court refused to hear the case this year.
