Subject:
Taxpayers Deserve A Public Option As Good As Congress Already Has

To:
Sen. Harry Reid

November 6, 2009

Hello,
I'm writing to voice my support for MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT - opt-in at the individual level.

This proposal would be DEFICIT NEUTRAL if enrollees are charged a fair market price for their coverage.

If WE'RE WILLING TO PAY FOR IT, taxpayers deserve to have a public option at least as good as that currently available to members of Congress.

The coverage should be PORTABLE TO ANY PROVIDER, with no pricing restrictions that would penalize providers.

If we can purchase NON-PROFIT HEALTH COVERAGE from Medicare, we'll get more bang for our buck because non-profit insurers spend only 4% on overhead, vs 17% in private insurance.

If we can buy Medicare coverage, our insurer will no longer be using our premiums to pay lobbyists to undercut our consumer protections.

The private health insurance industry would still be able to sell any sort of competing or supplemental coverage they want to.

Separating the issue of health insurance COST CONTROL from the health insurance SAFETY NET issue, and framing them as SEPARATE BILLS will improve the odds of making some progress on healthcare reform in our lifetimes.
