Health Care Reform

I emailed previously, but have only heard from my local Congresman. I have been impressed by the news I have heard about you and hope to continue being impressed, especially with your vote of No on the Health Care Reform bill. Below is my response I sent to Congressman Snyder.
Congressman Snyder,
Thank you for taking the time to reply back to me. I know that I am only one of a few people in your district. Please know that I am not affiliated with any party, I am an Independent with my own views and often jump "party" lines for the best candidate.
I did vote for you last term. But, I must say that I am concerned about the Health Care Reform bill. I know there are many people who do not have health insurance and some costs have gone up, but I don't think a government run option is the answer. I have been watching the news and reading up (not just FOX, haha) and I don't think that the bill that we have rushed into making is in the best interest of the American people.
From what I understand, it does not really address the main issues we have with Health Care. As a society, 85% of us are happy with the health coverage that we have, and I know you are as well. I pay approx. $487 a year for a really good PPO plan, and I don't want to pay more. Already some of my taxes are going to Medicare and Medicaid, and I think we should shore up those systems instead of trying to revamp the entire system.
Health Care in America is not broken. Yes, there are high costs. I received a statement from my insurance company where the Dr said it cost $500 to do a quick 2 minute procedure, and they changed that to about $60. So, it seems there are some checks and balances. Maybe that happened because I have good insurance.
I think we need to focus on tort reform, we spend way too much money on lawsuits and lawyers (or ambulance chasers) taking advantage of the system that ultimately rises costs. When an OB/GYN has to decide between delivering new life into the world or not, his/her main concern is the cost of insurance on himself to avoid litigation and to be covered,.
In 2005, my father passed away from Dr negligence. At the time I understood that accidents happen, Dr's are not infallible! But, if he had not been so afraid of litigation, he would have given us honest information about what was going on instead of lying to us for 3 days, and yes...his lies prompted us to want to pursue litigation because honesty would have been more appropriate.
I think Congress needs to step back and rethink what the American people (the people who elected you) and decide what is really the best thing for Americans. Again, the system is not broken. A small percentage do not have health care, but how much of that is their choice?
I think we need to "kill the bill", step back and focus on what we really need. Revamp the indigent policies that are already in place and work on reform that will help lower overall costs. A complete overhaul of the system is unneccessary and not going to work in the long run.
I am of the age where I border the younger generation who feels the "entitlement" of a free lunch, but I am old enough to have worked hard to get where I am at and do not want to be penalized because of it. My mother is very lucky, she has great coverage because of the sacrifices my Father made in the United States Navy, and I don't want to see her lose anything my father and she herself worked so hard for.
My neice falls into the generation that feels entitled, and frankly she is not going to make much of herself, especially if we can't convice her that hard work and time is the way to make something of themselves. I'm sure your road to the Congress was not an easy one.
Thank you for your time and consideration, and I hope I will be able to thank you for the right voter.
Sincerely,
Alicia Toth

Dear Ms. Toth:
Thank you for contacting me regarding health care. I appreciate hearing from you.
The 111th Congress has been working diligently to produce a health care reform package that will improve the lives of all Americans. As you know, the health care system is changing for all of us, and private and small business premiums are increasing faster than wages. Health insurance reform needs to help the uninsured, the underinsured, and those individuals who are insured and are satisfied with their current plan.
As you may know, the America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009 was introduced earlier this year and referred to three House committees: Energy and Commerce, Education and Labor, and Ways and Means. On October 29, 2009 the House of Representatives unveiled H.R. 3962, the Affordable Health Care for America Act. This bill is the culmination of the three committee markups as well as months of discussions, deliberations, and public meetings between Members of Congress and their constituents. H.R. 3962 is available to view online, several days before floor debate in the House begins, at the website for the House Rules Committee at http://www.rules.house.gov and at the website for the Library of Congress at http://www.thomas.gov. I will be following this legislation very closely.
Thank you once again for your comments. I appreciate having the benefit of your views and look forward to hearing from you in the future.
.
Sincerely
Vic Snyder
Member of Congress
