Dear Congressperson,
I am writing to you in desperation and outrage. My father, a hardworking man and an amazing parent, is in dire straits. He has worked hard all of my life to earn a living, contribute to his field and give our family its own taste of the American Dream. He taught me to be a good citizen of planet Earth. And yet here he is, not yet old enough to get Medicare, out of work due to the death of his industry (print media) and diagnosed with Cancer just as his COBRA coverage is about to expire. He has moved back to our home state of Ohio and lives in Cortland.
Congress is more interested in lobbies than American lives and actually reforming and improving our healthcare system. Shame on you. Shame on Republicans for having no plan at all and shame on Democrats for lacking the will and cohesion to make real changes. How can you leave so many Americans without the care they need just so you can line your already rich pockets? What kind of "civilization" treats its citizens this way? My father is a real person. He is not a statistic. He is not some person who refuses to work. He is not a number or figure to manipulate. He is my Dad. He deserves better. We all do. This shouldn't be about party. This should be about wanting to make the medical system we live under better. Under the current system, my father can not get new insurance due to his new diagnosis of Cancer. That is absolutely inhumane. The system is saying that if you are sick before you sign a policy, you are not worth covering and therefore you face a death sentence at the hands of pencil pushers working for billionaires who would rather let you die than lose a penny of profit. This is not capitalism; it is simply brutal. I honestly don't care what party you belong to. I only need to know who is signing your checks. If you are in the pockets of the insurance companies, then you have betrayed your oath, your honor and your position in the legislative branch of our government. Give Americans a public option. Give my Father the option to be covered. Create the America that should be.
