Please Co-sponsor the SAVE Act
To: Rep. Christopher Smith
November 5, 2009
We are very glad that you cosponsored the SAVE Act during the 110th Congress. However, we are disappointed and concerned that you have not decided to cosponsor it this Congress. Your constituents are counting on you to support SAVE Act as soon as possible!
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the current U-6 unemployment rate is 15.9%. This means that 25 million Americans are considered to be unemployed. Doesn't this fact break your heart?
However, when one takes a closer look at the figures, it is clear that the problem is much more severe for certain parts of our society.
30% of all young adults (ages 18-29) with only a high school diploma are unemployed. 30% of U.S.-born Hispanic high school dropouts are unemployed. 32% of all teenagers (ages 16-17) are unemployed. 35% of all U.S.-born Hispanic young adults with only a high school diploma are unemployed. 41% of all Black American high school dropouts are unemployed. 44% of Black young adults with only a high school diploma are unemployed. 47% of U.S.-born Hispanic teens are unemployed. 56% of Black American teens are unemployed. Are you starting to see a worrying trend? Can't you see that our nation is depending on its Congress to create jobs?
I was depending on you to support Rep. Shuler's SAVE Act (like you did during the 110th Congress). I know you understand the necessity of the bill's passage and I cannot fathom why you haven't yet cosponsored it.
Please help support 25+ million unemployed and underemployed workers and cosponsor H.R. 3308, the SAVE Act.
