Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison
Sen. John Cornyn
Rep. Chet Edwards
November 5, 2009
am writing to ask you to cosponsor S. 1762, a bill that is very important to me and my family as a family member of a person with Down Syndrome. In the past 30 years, individuals with Down Syndrome have made tremendous advances thanks to the opportunities made available in educating individuals and enabling them to live and work in their communities. Many individuals with Down Syndrome have become taxpaying members of society! A great deal more, however, needs to be accomplished in enhancing the quality of life for individuals born with this genetic condition. This can be done by advancing knowledge about Down syndrome through research efforts.
In the past few weeks a bill has been introduced that would increase resources and provide better coordination among federal programs and the National Institutes of Health. S. 1762 (the “21 act”) would create Down Syndrome research Centers of Excellence; establish a coordinating committee to coordinate Down Syndrome activities across the National Institutes of Health and other federal health programs and activities; and develop a National Down Syndrome Patient Registry and Biobank through cooperative agreements with the Centers for Disease Control.
If you are interested in signing on as a cosponsor and getting more information, you may contact: Stacy Cervenka in Senator Brownback's office at 202-224-6521.
