Vote NO on H.R. 2499 ... No Puerto Rican Statehood without Official English

To:
Sen. Frank Lautenberg
Rep. Christopher Smith
Sen. Robert Menendez

November 4, 2009

Please vote NO on H.R. 2499, the misnamed Puerto Rico Democracy Act of 2009.

H.R. 2499 does not require Puerto Rico to adopt English as the language of its government before it can be admitted as a state.

It is a threat to our nation's unity in English and could easily transform the U.S. into a nation divided by language like Canada.

Also the two-stage plebiscite in H.R. 2499 is not democratic. It limits voters' choices and discriminates against US citizens born outside Puerto Rico.

Puerto Ricans have rejected statehood three times since 1991. Why then are they being asked to vote again when it's obvious their desire to join the U.S. is very weak?
