1990 page So-Called Healthcare Reform Bill

To:

Rep. Jeff Flake
Sen. Jon Kyl

November 2, 2009

For a country that has functioned pretty danged well for 200+ years with a 4 page Constitution and a one page Bill of Rights, it seem amazing that you, our elected representatives, feel a need to even consider the monstrous 1990 page bill that is going to be voted upon soon. Shame on all of you!

I support incremental and precise change to healthcare, and I assure you that this proposed bill will surely raise the wrath of US voters from every side of the aisle for a myriad of reasons.

As a project manager, I learned one key lesson….

To solve any problem you must first know the ROOT CAUSE(S) of a problem and then map solution(s) with realistic expectations as to how they will solve the problem. Good intentions or shotgun approaches simply do not provide solutions…normally they just compound the problem and make it more complex to finally resolve.

That said, it seems that the basic problem to be addressed is the rising COST of the what most consider to be the best health care system in the world….and a means to make it affordable to more CITIZENS that contribute tax dollars (now or before they retired) into funding you, our government.

The Health Industry seems to run with a net profitability around the 2-3% mark….not exactly price gouging huh?! Provider themselves seem to clear a fair and not exorbitant profit for their skills. Hospitals/clinics/etc. NET very little, given the amount of gratis care they must give to uninsured patients in need. That is not where all the money seems to be going.

Nope, it seems to be:
1. Fraud and abuse…aka organized crime and other opportunists
2. Wasted "CYA" procedures to avoid tort suites
3. Abuse by patients that allow their abusive personal habits (drug abuse, food abuse, overeating/obesity, unnecessary procedures to grossly increase the healthcare system and costs.
4. Inability to shop for cheaper solutions in other states, etc.

Please, focus your/our efforts ONLY on these and similar issues…..you don't need 1990 pages of legislation to do that. Actually, that might be considered doing the job we already entrusted to you, couldn't it?!

Please, give us a government we can Believe In…..that even sounds a lot like a campaign slogan, doesn't it?!
