Rep. Doc Hastings

November 1, 2009

Last week I paged through the entire health reform bill that is now on the house floor. Speaker Pelosi and the caucus did a fine job of coalescing the best proposals.

I am all for the temporary program for the high-risk pool but I would expand it to older workers who are willing to retire. This would release a few jobs to younger people.

I want the Dicks/Inslee amendment to pass so that states will have an incentive to lower Medicare costs.

I do not want to pay offsets to businesses for the extra costs of insuring workers older than 55. I realize that many large employers self-insure. That is their choice and should not be supported with federal funds. Businesses should calculate their risks when they negotiate their plans.

That's all I have to suggest. The House did a great job writing this bill.
