My Health Insurance Premiums Out of control!

To:
Rep. Charles Gonzalez

October 28, 2009

I write this letter with much frustration with what is going on with the Health Care debate.

I am a retired air traffic controller. I spent 25 years keeping our country's skies safe. We are a proud bunch. I am especially proud of the fact that my father was an air traffic controller for over 35 years and he ended his profession as a facility manager at a major U.S. airport's air traffic control tower. My two oldest sons have just applied as air traffic controllers and if hired, would make it third generation of air traffic controllers in our family.

I retired from the FAA in May of last year (2008). I am now on a fixed income. Since I retired, my premiums with Aetna have gone up from $361.71 per month in 2008 to $455.41 per month in 2009 and I just found out they will be going up to $595.21 per month. That is a $233.50 increase in less than two years. Meanwhile, I did research on the internet found out that the CEO of Aetna, received compensation in excess of $35 million in 2007 and 2008 combined.

I am not so much concerned with what Aetna pays their CEO. My sole concern is what my premiums are.

My questions to you as my elected representative are:

1) So, can I expect my health insurance premiums to increase at these rates going forward? - Because if so, I am going to have to go back to work, possibly sell my house, and who knows what else in order to provide for my family.

2) Do you see anything wrong with this?

3) Will a public option help keep my premium rate increases at an acceptable level?

Now, I am not someone on welfare looking for a handout. I am someone that worked in a distinguished profession for many years and now I feel like I am getting gouged by greedy corporation interests. I want to know what my elected officials are doing about this. From what I see in the media, many of the elected officials get paid large amounts from these insurance companies (coming from my premiums, do doubt), so I wonder who you all are working for - me or them?

I wish I had a lot of money to give you like the insurance companies do, so my representatives would listen to me…oh, well.

Please respond to my concern at your earliest convenience.

Thank you,

Concerned Constituent
