Health Care Reform Legislation

To:
Sen. John Rockefeller

October 27, 2009

Senator Rockefeller,

I am writing to inform you that I oppose all health care reform legislation that includes a government-run insurance option. Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi can do their best to try and deceive the American people with some creative name changing, but it does not change the fact that they are still peddling the same socialized health care, and we do not want it. This is part of a power grab of epic proportions, that is slowly destroying the United States of America, its citizens and the freedoms we enjoy as such. I urge you to vote against S.1679 and any further legislative action which insists upon taking away our choice to decide what is best for us and bankrupting our country.

The simple fact is that not everyone needs health care provided for them, and to try to accommodate people who are perfectly willing and/or able to purchase private health care plans on their own is complete idiocy. Through our places of employment, my husband and I, who are part of the middle class, are able to purchase health and dental insurance, and I also have a flexible spending plan. We are completely happy with these plans and can afford to purchase this adequate care for ourselves. Please do not jeopardize the millions of Americans who want to work hard every day to provide for their family. And do not punish the businesses, both large and small, who go out of their way to provide quality and affordable insurance for their employees.

The government tries to tell us that 46 million people are currently uninsured. Let's take a closer look at that. About 10 million of these people are illegal aliens or other non-citizens.1 Another 18 million have a household income of over $50,000 per year.2 More than half of this group of 18 million has a household income of over $75,000 a year.3 Those falling into this category could most certainly purchase their own health insurance, if they chose to do so. Add to that another 14 million, who are currently "uninsured," but qualify for government health insurance - only they haven't applied for it yet.4 That trims things a bit, doesn't it? So, after all of that, the real size of the group that is chronically uninsured is likely in the area of three percent of our population.5 Not perfect, I know, but considerably smaller than the number quoted by the left (and the media), who portray it as a crisis of epidemic proportions.

I want people to have help purchasing their health care - when they really need it. And that seems to be happening for some people, 83 million to be exact. Currently, the United States government does provide some sort of government health care to 83 million people.6 So, close to 30% of our country is already living under government health care. Help the people that need it and stop trying to tell the rest of us that you know what is best for us. Believe me, you are out of touch and don't have a clue.

While this is a very frightening time in America, it is also a very inspiring time. Something is happening across this great land of ours. People are waking up and coming to the realization that their country and its freedoms are in jeopardy, and have decided to do something about it. Tea parties, town halls, phone calls, letters, faxes, e-mails: people are speaking out and taking a stand - ordinary people like me. We can and are making a difference. And we will continue to do so. Until you listen and stop the madness, we will be there to hold you accountable. If the government continues to travel on this socialist road they are on, they will find themselves out of a job come reelection time. And that is something you can count on.
