Sorry, but please Oppose Health Bills #2
To: Rep. Charles Gonzalez
October 26, 2009
Yes, this is part two of my last email saying why (despite my inner turmoil and what my compassionate & idealistic heart says) I must ask that you oppose the current healthcare bills.
I am not convinced (and neither should you) that they'll do enough to substantially resolve current problems and fear that they may cause other (foreseen & unforeseen) problems.
Medicare & Social Security still need reform .
I notice how (though Medicare's growing cost has needed reform for years) it is only now (when more spending has been proposed) that Medicare is being substantially restructured or big 'cuts' are being considered. Besides its doubtful that the "cuts" will keep costs down for long since they are mostly theoretical or "projected savings."
The Deficit is not shrinking.
One of my biggest fears is that we be left with a popular, yet ultimately ineffective program that we cannot shut down or substantially modify (like Medicaid). That we be stuck with paying for an expensive program with meager results.
Mandates
I completely understand how obliging healthy people to participate will increase the risk pool and (maybe) decrease costs somewhat. Yet, it seems that that's just a backdoor way of correcting for the risky decision of expanding insurance to more high-risk people.
Taxing Cadillac-policies
Lastly, I feel its unfair to tax generous policies. If you're lucky enough to have a great policy, more power to you. Let's pay for this reform in a more straightforward/honest way or have the guts to cut the price tag.
Congressman, please don't vote for just "anything" for fear of not voting at all. Please do things the right way, or not at all. It is the entire nation & those who come after you who will bare the greatest consequences. Thanks so much for your time and I hope the intern reading this learned something too. ;)
