Subject:
Immigration-Dream Act
To: Rep. Gerry Connolly
October 25, 2009
I would like to request that you please be a cosponsor of the Dream Act Bill. I am a volunteer tutor and frequently meet teenagers who only find out of their illegal status in this country when they apply to colleges or try to join the armed forces.
It's heart breaking to see the despair of these young people, who grew up in this country and who know no other place as home. They are often excellent students and young people of marvelous character and great potential.
One 17 year old girl last week told me that she only found out she was here illegally a few months ago when she started applying to colleges and was rejected because of her status. She said she cried all night and that being rejected by colleges because of her immigration status was like being disowned by her parents. She felt her world had suddenly come tumbling down on her, for the realization of her dreams no longer seemed possible. She sees the US as her country, her home, and Americans as her people. She is desperate to continue her education and terrified that she may be sent back to her country of birth one day, a place that is totally foreign to her.
Please, help these youngsters reach their full potential and accept them as our fellow brother Americans. Please, sponsor the Dream Act.
