HEALTH CARE AND THE CONSTITUTION
To: Rep. Steny Hoyer
October 22, 2009
I fail to see how you can claim that the 1st Amendment, section 8 (General Welfare Clause) of the US Constitution empowers Congress to order Americans to buy Health Insurance. There is no INDIVIDUAL mandate in the Constitution for this action!!! Stop pushing this Health Care bill with a public option by trying to twist the Constitution into something it is not. Under your line of thinking, the General Welfare Clause would allow Congress to do anything it wanted to the American citizen under the guise of improving life for Americans. Toss this mess of a Bill out the window and start over with debate. Come up with a bipartisan bill that does not wreck our existing system and does not include a public option which will lead to single payer, which is what President Obama and many of his Czars and Congressional members want. Trust me, most Americans do not want a single payer system which will lead to rationing care and increased costs. Don't think so, look at Hawaii, Massachusetts, Canada, and the United Kingdom. They all have those problems. I don't want any part of it. Tort reform and interstate health insurance would be two great places to start looking. Oh by the way, why doesn't the President and Congress fix the Trillions of dollars in unfunded liabilities in Medicare and Medicaid before attempting overreaching legislation that we cannot afford.
