Dear Representative Perriello

I would like to express my opinions on the health care reform measures currently being debated in Congress.

•I do support reforms to health insurance. These would include:
oRequiring all persons living in the United States, whether they are citizens or not, to carry health insurance.
oRequiring insurance companies to insure everyone regardless of prior health issues.
oAllowing insurance companies to compete for customers on a nationwide basis. This would promote true competition between insurers, lowering prices. It would also reduce overhead, thus lowering consumer prices, for the companies which offer insurance in numerous states, necessitating maintaining multiple headquarters.

•I do support a Government subsidy for those unable to afford insurance on their own. This should not be a 100% subsidy - everyone can pay something toward their insurance.

•I do support a Co-op type system to aid consumers in finding the best insurance and price to fit their situation.

•I do support Tort reform. The threat of frivolous lawsuits is a major contributor to the cost of health care.

•I do support a revamping of Medicare and Medicaid. These programs can be run much more efficiently than they currently are.

•I DO NOT support shifting the cost of Medicare and Medicaid to the states, especially if some states will be exempt. This will only result in an increase in state taxes. It will not make these programs more efficient.

•I DO NOT support a Government run health insurance plan, or "Public Option". This will only lead to a single payer system, which is shown to be very ineffective in other countries. And, with all due respect, I have not seen any agency of the Government run effectively or efficiently.

•I DO NOT support taxing the "Cadillac insurance plans". People should be free to choose the level of coverage they want without punishment.

I feel that there are many options to improve health insurance and health care which will not cost 1 to 2 Trillion dollars. These options should be fully explored and implemented before great expenditures are made. At this point in our nation's history, we are broke and can not afford to be wasteful in our spending.

Thank you for your attention.
