First Time Home Buyer Tax Credit

Your reply below did not answer my questions. When I wrote to you Monday I stated:
1. In a recent response on taxes you stated "However, we must be sure that any revision to the tax code is fair to all Americans." We already own a home and would greatly stimulate the economy by using our $28,000 (family of 5 at $5,600 per person) to repair or upgrade our 16 year old home with more energy efficient appliances and repairs so we continue to have a thriving neighborhood. Please tell me how giving this to First Time Home Buyers only is "fair to all Americans?"
2. Do you really want to stimulate the economy? Then why not give each of us our money back and let all of us use it to buy things for our home or purchase a home?
The current financial situation will not be improved by increasing the national debt and redistributing the people's money. You and the rest of congress keep doing the same things over and over again expecting different results. Stop the insanity. Do not extend this program.
Congress has doubled the national debt in ~10 years. Between TARP and ARRA you have added ~$1.8 TRILLION to the nation's debt or ~$5,600 each for every American just this year.
Stop spending money congress does not have. Give all of us our money back and let us use it to stimulate the economy.

Dear John:
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on extending the home buyer tax credit.
With the home buyer tax credit program set to expire December 1, 2009, the Senate Finance Committee is considering a bill (S.1678), which would extend the credit through May 31, 2010.
While many factors led to the current economic crisis, the collapse of the housing market precipitated problems that have affected communities across Ohio. To restore our economic strength, it is clear that we need to devote special attention to the weak housing market. Last February, I supported provisions contained within the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to create a tax credit of up to $8,000 for families purchasing their first home.
Stable, affordable housing is central to good neighborhoods, schools, and communities in which we live and work. Should the Senate consider S.1678, I will be sure to keep your views in mind.
Sincerely,
Sherrod Brown
United States Senator
