I firmly believe in the original constitution where "The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, chosen by the Legislature thereof for six Years; and each Senator shall have one Vote."
The 17th amendment changed this to state "The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, elected by the people thereof, for six years; and each Senator shall have one vote. The electors in each State shall have the qualifications requisite for electors of the most numerous branch of the State legislatures.
Legal dictionaries define Legislature as "a body of persons having the power to legislate; specifically: an organized body having the authority to make laws for a political unit (as a nation or state)"
Either way, I fail to see where the constitution allows the Governor of a state to "dictate" and solely select the person to fill a senate vacancy and find it appalling that various legislatures can manipulate the system so as to alter the political power in Washington. http://www.congress.org/news/2009/10/08/...
We the people elect our state legislature, federal representatives and senators and that must include any vacancies.
I want you to support and pass legislation that would forbid gubernatorial appointments to fill Senate vacancies.
