Subject:
Pledge of Allegiance and coins
To: Rep. Dave Reichert
October 15, 2009
I am so thankful that President Obama mentioned 'non-believers' in his inaugural address. You have no idea how much pride was in me on that day to be included in America after all that we've been through.
Washington state has 25% non-believers, so we must lead the way to get our separation of church and state back to par.
As a non-believer, all I ask is that we go back to having our kids say the Pledge of Allegiance the original way which was pre-1954. We lost our separation of Church and State when, on Flag Day that year, it was changed during the Cold War to add 'Under God' into it, which exludes many Americans of all faiths and those who are non-believers.
It is my hope that you will find a moment to pen something that will give us back our great country to where our children are not being casually indoctrinated on a daily basis. I would be glad to tell you my school days story of not saying 'that part' the pledge and getting a lot of unwanted attention for it. Of course I was too young and poor to know I had a legal case there or I would have done something about it. Kids don't have a voice in this and we need to speak to protect them.
Also, the money, what happend to our money? What was wrong with our secular motto? E Pluribus Unum was so great...why and how did we ever let that become the non-inclusive and divisive coin and bill with 'In God We Trust' advertised on it? How have we let that happen and stay like that for this many years? Please help us live by the promises of our US Constitution once again by penning your support on removing those words from our money and letting our pluralistic society have secular money once again.
I ask that you please put pen to paper on these items and help us out here...we are a silent closeted minority that really wants to be a part of America, we are 25% in the State of Washington and 10% nationwide...but we have no power other than the words written in our US Constitution, and that does not seem to be upheld at this time.
Did you even know that it was changed? If not, then education on this topic is much needed. We can be leaders in this.,.Jim McDermott is a great example of someone who gets it.
Wouldn't it be great if Washington was the first state to begin using the original Pledge of Allegiance in schools and all government functions and therefore upholding the US Constitution and including all 100% of it's residents and not just 75% or less?
