Support smart immigration policies

Our country is capable of discussing immigration without demonizing immigrants or those of us who support lower numbers. Congress must set the example.

A humane immigration policy would consider four primary classes of people:

(1) Those seeking to immigrate;
(2) Needful people left behind in the sending country;
(3) Disadvantaged citizens of the receiving country; and
(4) The general citizenry of the receiving country.

The interests of those four classes will inevitably clash. You must weigh the needs of each group when considering immigration policy. Current immigration policy adds approximately one million legal immigrants every year (lax enforcement policies allow another one million people to settle here illegally). Immigration accounts for more than three-quarters of U.S. population growth since 1970, and will account for more than 80 percent of U.S. population growth over the next 42 years. Federal immigration policies will be largely responsible for adding another 135 million people to the U.S. population over the next 42 years. What effect will these policies have on traffic congestion, crowded schools, loss of natural habitat, and wages and job opportunities?

How will this forced population growth effect the four classifications of people above? The first group will likely benefit (although freedom of movement and opportunity may be more limited for them than for prior waves of immigrants). The other three groups stand to lose significantly. U.S. immigration policy dips liberally from the most energetic, educated and skilled citizens from the underdeveloped world (these are the change agents that might make a difference in their home countries). Disadvantaged U.S. citizens will face competition for already scare resources and jobs. Finally, all Americans and immigrants will suffer from Congressionally-forced population growth that will leave our country with depleted resources for future generations.

Please support smart, reduced immigration policies.
