Subject:
Giumarra Corporation Labor Abuses and Deaths
To: Sen. Jack Reed
October 11, 2009
The Giumarra Corporation in California (and its new label, Nature's Partner) routinely violates labor laws by treating employees inhumanely, setting unrealistic work quotas, forcing employees to "race" and then firing the losers, preventing employees from joining a union and giving employees forced unpaid "time outs" as though they are children. It is no way to treat an employee. The result of these policies have been disastrous. Two farm workers have already died in the grape fields.
In triple degree temperatures, the workers have been denied water, shade and breaks.
Giumarra has a history of intimidating and bullying workers. Back in 2006, Giumarra's unlawful interference forced a union election to be thrown out by an administrative judge. Despite the deaths, the company continues to abuse its workers.
Under the new label, Nature's Partner, they continue to force workers to pick faster under triple digit temperatures and retaliate against workers who ask questions of their supervisors.
Please ensure that this company and companies like this treat workers with dignity and respect the law. If they do not treat employees fairly, they should not be allowed to operate. We are not a third world country and employees have the legal right to form or join a union.
Thank you.
