Ritecare in Rhode Island

Dear Congressman Langevin,
I attended your presentation regarding health care reform at the Wilcox Park in Westerly, Rhode Island, last summer. It was very informative and I was glad to be there. However, I did not get a chance to ask my question, so I will ask it now. In Rhode Island we already have an excellent health insurance program with Ritecare. Why not make it available to people that don't currently quality due to higher income by increasing the monthly payment required? Families of 3 making 250% above the poverty limit can purchase the insurance with a monthly payment of $92 per month. My family makes about 395% of the poverty limit for a family of 3 and thus we are not allowed to buy it. With simple mathematics it would seem that a monthly payment of about $145 would be the corresponding amount for the premium if we were allowed to buy it. The only reason that such insurance exists is because WE, the people making the higher incomes, are paying the taxes to support such programs. WHY CANT WE BUY IT??? We pay for the program and it is NOT available to us, and that is not fair. We would be willing to pay much more than the corresponding $145 monthly premium for this insurance. We would happily pay $500 for it. We are glad that the government is trying to establish some kind of health care reform, but until that is up and running, why not help us locally with a program that is already in place. Please reply to me and let me know what you think.
