Subject:
Leave the DeMint Border Fence amendment in the Homeland Secty bill!

To:
Rep. Jerry Lewis

October 3, 2009

I am writing to you because I see that you are a member of the Homeland Security spending bill conference committee.

As your constituent, I am asking that you will work to ensure that the DeMint amendment passed by the Senate will NOT be removed or altered, but will remain intact in the final version of the bill.

This amendment requires DHS to complete almost 700 miles of double-layered, reinforced fencing along the southwest border by the end of 2010. This amendment is crucial to true immigration reform because it would direct DHS to complete the border fence as Congress originally intended when it passed the Secure Fence Act of 2006. DHS has been constructing fencing that would only prevent vehicular border crossings, but the DeMint Amendment will ensure that the border fence will also reduce illegal alien foot traffic.

It is essential to our nation's security & well-being that this amendment remains in the final version of the Homeland Security bill.

I therefore strongly urge you to keep this Senate-approved amendment in the bill.
