Subject:
Pay Parity for teachers in combat zone Afghanistan/Pakistan

To:
Rep. Charles Gonzalez

October 2, 2009

English Teachers (teaching Iraqi and Afghani forces to speak English in order that U.S. soldiers be able to communicate with them) live and work in combat zones alongside U.S. Air Force and coalition military forces, yet they are the only ones who pay taxes on their danger pay. Even private contractors have tax exemptions. Why is this? Do we not value the contribution of teachers? How has this been overlooked for so long? Bill S1166 4/19/07 by Rep. Frank Wolf tried to rectify this glaring omission of the 1986 tax code by "excluding from gross income certain combat zone compensation of civilian employees of the United States", but the bill apparently died with the last Congress. Please do something to recognise the service of EVERYONE serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, and possibly soon to be Pakistan. Communication matters--and English teachers are vital to this mission. Please recognise their service by reintroducing a bill to exempt their combat pay in parity with all others who are so relieved. Thank you.
