Subject:
Extend the first-time home buyers tax credit
To: Rep. Charles Gonzalez
September 28, 2009
Dear Sir,
I am a physician recently out of medical school with an unruly amount of educational debt. My husband and I married a year ago and subsequently bought a house last winter when the market was very poor. We were told that because it was my first home that if we filed our taxes separately I could get the $8,000 credit. Unfortunately when the fist-time home buyer's tax credit was written it excluded our situation. If this credit is to be extended I think it should retroactively allow for individuals like myself. I should be able to file my taxes separately and qualify as it was my first home. Such incentive was a large part of my wanting to buy a house despite already having unimaginable debt from wanting to be a physician. We would be spending a lot more money on home improvements to our 1928 house if we had the incentive credit to put money back into the house.
