Thank you for fighting to restore bankruptcy protections to student loans.

Rep. George Miller

September 28, 2009

Thank you for fighting to restore consumer bankruptcy protections for private student loans.

Over 228,000 people have rapidly joined Robert Applebaum's "Forgive Student Loan Debt to Stimulate The Economy" facebook page. It also features a petition for President Obama to cancel student loan debt to stimulate the economy with over 50,000 signatures. It will be presented to the President when it reaches 55,000 signatures. This movement continues to grow as more and more young people are graduating with over six-figure private student loan debt (strangely, the only form of debt not covered by consumer bakruptcy protections) with enormous interest rates into a absolutely horrible job market. Mr. Applebaum, and his partner, C. Cryn Johannsen are making the case for cancelling student loan debt to stimulate the economy. I for one, am in over six-figure student loan debt with monthly payments exceeding $2000. I will never be able to buy a car or a home. I will probably never be able to have a family or contribute much to our society or economy unless I at least have the right to file for bankruptcy. Alan Collinge has formed an organization called, "Student Loan Justice" which advocates the restoration of bankruptcy protection rights for student loan debt. His facebook group is new, but has already gathered over 2000 people.
