Tax on Healthcare Plans

To:
Rep. Jim Jordan

September 26, 2009

Dear Speaker Pelosi,

I am writing to urge you to take the tax of so-called "high cost" healthcare plans off the table.

I work for a small employer who does provide health care coverage however our coverage is expensive due to the fact that we are small and have more than 80% of our employees over the age of 50 with various expensive conditions such as heart problems.

Our plan has a $5,000 deductible for singles and $10,000 for families. We have an HSA. The out of pocket is extremely high. Yet this plan costs more than $8,000 for individual coverage. It is NOT a "cadillac" plan by any means. It is very restrictive.

Congress needs to realize that you can not judge a plan by its cost. For single people with no children there are very few tax breaks. I am a widow who is unable to have children. I pay a higher percentage of taxes since I have few deductions (just my house) and I make much less than the median income in the US. Taxing my health insurance coverage would reduce my income even further.

Yes we need reform but not on the backs of the people who currently have insurance that barely meets their needs. You can not base this tax on the cost of the plan. It is NOT a good measure of its true value .
